RESUMO

@#The epithelial ingrowth under corneal flap is one of the complications after keratorefractive surgery, of which the incidence has declined dramatically with the improvement of relevant facilities and surgical techniques. However, epithelial ingrowth results from traumatic flap displacement has been describing in the literatures from time to time. If the prompt and efficient treatment cannot be taken, the severe complications of epithelial ingrowth will occur such as the alternation of refraction and cornea keratolysis. In this article, we reviewed the research progress of epithelial ingrowth after keratorefractive surgery.

RESUMO

The treatments of resectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) are controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the relative efficacy and safety of hepatic resection (HR) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treating resectable CRLM. Between January 2004 and May 2010, the enrolled patients were given hepatic resection (HR group; n=32) or percutaneous RFA (RFA group; n=21) as a first-line treatment for CRLM. All the tumors had a maximum diameter of 3.5 cm and all patients had five or less tumors. The patient background, tumor characteristics, cumulative survival rate and recurrence-free survival rate were assessed in both groups. There were significantly more patients with comorbidities in the RFA group than those in the HR group (17 in RFA group vs. 10 in HR group; P<0.000). The mean maximum tumor diameter in the HR group and RFA group was 2.25±0.68 and 1.89±0.62 cm (P=0.054), and the mean number of tumors was 2.28±1.05 and 2.38±1.12 (P=0.744), respectively. The 1-, 3- and 5-year cumulative survival rates in the HR group were 87.5%, 53.1% and 31.3%, respectively, and those in the RFA group were 85.7%, 38.1% and 14.2%, respectively with the differences being not significant between the two groups (P=0.062). The 1-, 3- and 5-year recurrence-free survival rates in the HR group were 90.6%, 56.3% and 28.1%, respectively, and those in the RFA group were 76.1%, 23.8% and 4.8%, respectively, with the differences being significant between the two groups (P=0.036). In conclusion, as HR has greater efficacy than RFA in the treatment of resectable CRLM, we recommend it as the first option for this malignancy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUNDHeme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) can be induced by inflammatory cytokines, oxidation, ischemia, hypoxia, and endotoxins. As a "graft survival protective gene," HO-1 is a hot spot in organ transplantation research. However, the role of HO-1 gene expression in the function of human colon adenocarcinoma cell line (Caco-2) cells has not been reported previously.

METHODSThe role of HO-1 in the proliferation and migration of Caco-2 cells was analyzed using a stable HO-1 expression plasmid. We constructed a recombinant adeno-associated virus plasmid containing the HO-1 gene, heme oxygenase 1 (HMOX1), which was transfected into Caco-2 intestinal cells. We identified a number of target genes by global microarray analysis combined with real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay.

RESULTSOur results showed that significant HO-1 upregulation was demonstrated in the Caco-2 cells after HO-1 transfection. Restoration of HO-1 expression promoted proliferation and invasion in vitro. The CTNND1 gene, a member of the armadillo protein family, was identified as a direct HO-1 target gene.

CONCLUSIONOverexpression of HO-1 promotes Caco-2 cell proliferation and migration by targeting the CTNND1 gene.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo investigate the patterns of azoospermia factor C (AZFc) microdeletion in the Chinese Han population and optimize the selection of the required sequence tagged sites (STSs) of AZF microdeletion in multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

METHODSNine STSs (sY84, sY86, sY127, sY134, sY152, sY145, sY255, sY254 and sY157) were detected by multiplex polymerase reaction for Y chromosome microdeletion in 164 Chinese Han patients with severe oligozoospermia or non-obstructive azoospermia, and another 105 with normal sperm concentration were included as controls. Meanwhile 180 cases of AZFc microdeletion (absence of sY255 and sY254) from multiple reproductive medical centers were analyzed for sY145, sY152 and sY157.

RESULTSFourteen (8.5%) of the 164 patients with severe oligozoospermia or non-obstructive azoospermia showed AZFc microdeletion (absence of sY255 and sY254). All the 194 patients with the absence of sY255 and sY254 displayed the presence of sY145 and sY152, only 2 of them with sY157 present. Deletion of sY1206 and DAZ3/DAZ4 copies was confirmed in 1 case of severe oligozoospermia with sY157 absent only.

CONCLUSIONDeletion of sY255 and sY254 as well as sY157 is the most common pattern of AZFc microdeletion in the Chinese Han population. sY145 and sY152 can be omitted in AZFc screening. Absence of sY157 alone may be a new type of partial AZFc microdeletion in the Chinese Han population, and the clinical significance of unique sY157 absent needs to be further explored.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo explore the mechanism of L-Carnitine transport and the expression of OCTN2 mRNA in the human epididymis so as to provide a theoretical basis for male contraception.

METHODSWe collected specimens from human epididymides and determined the expressions of OCTN2 mRNA in the caput, corpus and cauda of the epididymis by RT-PCR.

RESULTSOCTN2 mRNA was expressed in the caput, corpus and cauda of the epididymis.

CONCLUSIONThe human epididymis may rely on OCTN2 for transporting L-Carnitine into the epididymal duct to promote sperm maturation. With the accumulation of information on OCTN2 in the human epididymis, OCTN2 will become a new molecular target for researches on male contraception.

RESUMO

Objective To explore the best time point for the ipsilateral hepatocellular apoptosis and the contralateraI hepatic hypertrophy after selective portal vein embolization(SPVE)in rabbit. Methods In a randomized study design, forty rabbits were divided into 5 groups with 8 rabbits per-group,including one as the control and the other 4 were treated with SPVE during open surgery. The rabbits were killed postoperatively,in 3,7,14,21 days respectively after the embolization. The hepatic lobes volume, the ipsilateral hepatocellular necrosis rates and apoptosis index, and liver functions were determined as well. Results In the treatment groups, the average amount of the right liver volumes decreased from 46.4 cm~3 preoperatively to 46.0,44.4,42.0,39.7 cm~3 in groups of 3,7,14,21 days postoperatively;meanwhile, the left liver volumes increased from 54.0 cm~3 preoperatively to 54.5,56.3,61.7,63.9 cm~3 respectively during 3, 7,14,21 days after the procedures. The rates of future remaining live volumes(FRLV)increased from 53.8% preoperatively to 54.2%,55.9%,59.0%,61.0% at 3,7,14,21 days postoperatively. The apoptosis indexes of hepatocells from group A to E were 8.1%,12.2%,19.4%,20.1%,14.2% respectively. Conclusions SPVE leads to atrophy of the ipsilateral hepatic lobe and hypertrophy of contralateral lobe, indicating that hepatocytes undergone apoptosis, rather than necrosis. The time point is 7 to 14 days.
